Growth of 2659 Atlantic cod Gadus morhua aged 4 to 9 years examined in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, peaked in most cases in June and was at a minimum in October or November. Water temperature, partial fullness index ( I P ) and gonado‐somatic index ( I G ) explained between 31 and 52% of the monthly variability in growth. Temperature and I P of capelin Mallotus villosus had significant effects on growth of all age groups and explained most of the variance for ages 6–8 and 4–5 years, respectively. The I P of large invertebrates (ages 4 to 7 years), sandlance ( Ammodytes sp. age 6 years) and demersal fishes (age 9 years) had age‐specific effects in the model. Overall, amphipods, decapods and echinoderms dominated the Atlantic cod diet in most seasons, but fish consumption by Atlantic cod was high in June and July, particularly on capelin. The rapid increase in somatic mass during June and July occurred despite cold water temperatures ( < 3° C at 50 m) and moderate to high gonado‐somatic index. The findings of this study suggest that when food was not a limiting factor, growth tended to increase even when Atlantic cod occupied colder waters, but when food was limiting, the opposite may have occured. 相似文献

Abstract
We present a regional fuel load model (1 km2 spatial resolution) applied in the southern African savanna region. The model is based on a patch-scale production efficiency
model (PEM) scaled up to the regional level using empirical relationships between patch-scale behavior and multi-source remote
sensing data (spatio-temporal variability of vegetation and climatic variables). The model requires the spatial distribution
of woody vegetation cover, which is used to determine separate respiration rates for tree and grass. Net primary production,
grass and tree leaf death, and herbivory are also taken into account in this mechanistic modeling approach. The fuel load
model has been calibrated and validated from independent measurements taken from savanna vegetation in Africa southward from
the equator. A sensitivity analysis on the effect of climate variables (incoming radiation, air temperature, and precipitation)
has been conducted to demonstrate the strong role that water availability has in determining productivity and subsequent fuel
load over the southern African region. The model performance has been tested in four different areas representative of a regional
increasing rainfall gradient—Etosha National Park, Namibia, Mongu and Kasama, Zambia, as well as in Kruger National Park,
South Africa. Within each area, we analyze model output from three different magnitudes of canopy coverage (<5, 30, and 50%).
We find that fuel load ranges predicted by the model are globally in agreement with field measurements for the same year.
High rainfall sustains green herbaceous production late in the dry season and delays tree leaf litter production. Effect of
water on production varies across the rainfall gradient with delayed start of green material production in more arid regions. 相似文献

Species richness in the alpine zone varies dramatically when communities are compared. We explored (i) which stress and disturbance factors were highly correlated with species richness, (ii) whether the intermediate stress hypothesis (ISH) and the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH) can be applied to alpine ecosystems, and (iii) whether standing crop can be used as an easily measurable surrogate for causal factors determining species richness in the alpine zone. Species numbers and standing crop were determined in 14 alpine plant communities in the Swiss Alps. To quantify the stress and disturbance factors in each community, air temperature, relative air humidity, wind speed, global radiation, UV-B radiation, length of the growing season, soil suction, pH, main soil nutrients, waterlogging, soil movement, number of avalanches, level of denudation, winter dieback, herbivory, wind damage, and days with frost were measured or observed. The present study revealed that 82% of the variance in␣vascular species richness among sites could be explained by just two abiotic factors, daily maximum temperature and soil pH. Daily maximum temperature and pH affect species richness both directly and via their effects on other environmental variables. Some stress and disturbance factors were related to species richness in a monotonic way, others in an unimodal way. Monotonic relationships suggest that the harsher the environment is, the fewer species can survive in such habitats. In cases of unimodal relationships (ISH and IDH) species richness decreases at both ends of the gradients due to the harsh environment and/or the interaction of other environmental factors. Competition and disturbance seemed only to play a secondary role in the form of fine-tuning species richness in specific communities. Thus, we concluded that neither the ISH nor the IDH can be considered useful conceptual models for the alpine zone. Furthermore, we found that standing crop can be used as an easily measurable surrogate for causal factors determining species richness in the alpine zone, even though there is no direct causality. 相似文献

This study describes the application of a protocol for biological assessment of water quality at first to third order streams
at Serra dos órg?os, an area covered by Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Major impacts in the region are domestic
effluents and deforestation. Our main objective is to establish biocriteria for the establishment of the Serra dos órg?os
Multimetric Index (SOMI) based on benthic macroinvertebrates. We used data from previous studies, sampled by experienced biologists,
from 1999 through 2002. The benthic macroinvertebrate community was sampled in 12 reference sites and seven impaired sites
in three river basins: Guapimirim, Macaé and Grande, all from the same bioregion. From the 22 tested metrics, 6 were included
in the SOMI (% Diptera, % Coleoptera, Family Taxa, EPT Taxa, BMWP-CETEC and % Shredders). Scores (5, 3 or 1) were developed
for these metrics to allow for aggregation into the index. Seven intermediately impaired sites were used for evaluating the
applicability of the multimetric index. We concluded that the SOMI is a robust easy-to-apply tool for biomonitoring programs
in the Serra dos órg?os region, south-east Brazil.

The major sexual dimorphisms in body size appear at puberty but, by then, 95% of the growth of the cranium is completed. As sexual dimorphism in the cranium is as great as for other parts of the body, this suggests that it must appear at an earlier age, and that cranium/body size ratios for the two sexes will vary during growth. Results from a longitudinal study of Montreal children are used to investigate this phenomenon. The effect is expressed quantitatively by proportional growth and growth velocity curves, based on the final size of boys, which show that the dimorphism indeed makes an early appearance. The data are also analyzed on an age scale relative to the ages of peak growth velocity in stature, derived from the individual growth curves. This shows that although there is a minor pubertal spurt in growth for the external cranial dimensions of boys, it contributes relatively little to the final dimorphism in cranial size. To summarize this aspect of growth, an index of cephalization is calculated: head length × head width/stature. Cross-sectional standards for the change of the mean index with age show a linear decline for boys and girls until puberty, with a constant difference between them. Summary A quantitative evaluation has been made of the sizes of neuronal granular vesicles (GV) in different (sub-)zones of the rat
median eminence. On the basis of the frequency distribution of the mean sizes of the GV in the individual nerve profiles,
at least 4 tentative categories of nerve profiles may be distinguished. However, available data do not permit characterization
of nerve fibre categories in terms of neurohormone and/or neurotransmitter storage.
From dorsal to ventral the palisade zone shows a decrease in mean size of GV; furthermore, the relative number of nerve profiles
characterized by small GV (mean size smaller than 112 nm) increases. In contrast, the GV in the zona granulosa, that part
of the external zone of the median eminence ventral to the palisade zone, are of relatively large size.
Qualitative observations indicate that the zona granulosa may be regarded as an area for both storage and release of biologically
active substances.

Feed represents a substantial proportion of production costs in the dairy industry and is a useful target for improving overall system efficiency and sustainability. The objective of this study was to develop methodology to estimate the economic value for a feed efficiency trait and the associated methane production relevant to Canada. The approach quantifies the level of economic savings achieved by selecting animals that convert consumed feed into product while minimizing the feed energy used for inefficient metabolism, maintenance and digestion. We define a selection criterion trait called Feed Performance (FP) as a 1 kg increase in more efficiently used feed in a first parity lactating cow. The impact of a change in this trait on the total lifetime value of more efficiently used feed via correlated selection responses in other life stages is then quantified. The resulting improved conversion of feed was also applied to determine the resulting reduction in output of emissions (and their relative value based on a national emissions value) under an assumption of constant methane yield, where methane yield is defined as kg methane/kg dry matter intake (DMI). Overall, increasing the FP estimated breeding value by one unit (i.e. 1 kg of more efficiently converted DMI during the cow’s first lactation) translates to a total lifetime saving of 3.23 kg in DMI and 0.055 kg in methane with the economic values of CAD $0.82 and CAD $0.07, respectively. Therefore, the estimated total economic value for FP is CAD $0.89/unit. The proposed model is robust and could also be applied to determine the economic value for feed efficiency traits within a selection index in other production systems and countries. 相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die serotoninhaltigen, nach Formaldehydbedampfung im UV-Licht gelbfluoreszierenden EC-Zellen im Magendarmepithel wurden bei normalen und bei tryptophanfrei ernährten Ratten untersucht. Bei Kontrolltieren ist die Zahl der EC-Zellen, bezogen auf die Schleimhautfläche, im Duodenum größer als im Pylorus. Im Duodenum sind die EC-Zellen etwa gleichmäßig auf Oberflächen- und Drüsenepithel verteilt, im Pylorus ganz überwiegend im Drüsenepithel lokalisiert. Die Brunnerschen Drüsen besitzen keine EC-Zellen. Tryptophanfreie Diät führt zu starker Abnahme des Serotoningehalts der EC-Zellen, nach Umsetzung auf Normalkost steigt er wieder an. — Die Ergebnisse sprechen weiterhin dafür, daß die EC-Zelle sowohl Speicher- als auch Syntheseort von Serotonin ist. Dabei kommt Serotonin in der EC-Zelle wahrscheinlich in zwei Fraktionen vor, nämlich zytoplasmatisch gelöst und granulagebunden. Die histochemischen Nachweismethoden für Serotonin, Möglichkeiten des Eingriffs in die verschiedenen Syntheseschritte des Serotonins und deren Spezifität in bezug auf die EC-Zelle als physiologischem Ort der Serotoninsynthese werden diskutiert.

Summary The serotonin-containing EC-cells of the gastro-intestinal mucosa, which show yellow fluorescence after treatment with gaseous formaldehyde, were investigated in the rat after normal and tryptophan-free nourishment. In control animals the number of EC-cells, related to epithelium area is higher in the duodenum than in the pyloric region. In the duodenum the EC-cells show about the same distribution in surface epithelium and gland epithelium. In the pyloric region EC-cells are localized predominantly in the gland epithelium. No EC-cells were found in the Brunner glands. After tryptophan-free diet the serotonin-level of the EC-cells strongly decreases; serotonin-level increases after return to normal nourishment. The results also suggest, that serotonin is synthesized as well as stored in the EC-cell and that it occurs in two fractions: bound to granules and dissolved in the cytoplasm. Discussion deals with the histochemical methods for determination of serotonin, the possibilities of influencing the pathways of serotonin metabolism and the specificity of these possibilities concerning the EC-cell as the physiological site of serotonin synthesis.
